Our goal is to develop and deliver an effective career development system for high school students
The Career Development/ROP department is part of the countywide instructional system of high school career pathways. These pathways are designed to support district-developed job skills classes, align school-based learning to what’s happening in the workplace, and deliver relevant career-focused education to high school students. Career pathways give all students access to effective programs that prepare them for future work opportunities.
To learn more, take a look at the Career Pathways publication (pdf), which is a bilingual English/Spanish document that provides an overview of career pathways in Sonoma County.
The Regional Occupational Program (ROP) is an integral part of the career pathway system. ROP classes are offered on every high school campus in the county to provide students with training that's focused on specific work industries. View our ROP website for a complete listing of courses.
Each ROP course is aligned with one of the nine active industry sectors in Sonoma County. An advisory committee for each sector provides ongoing advice on course content, classroom material and equipment, and the workplace standards associated with that industry. ROP courses are generally the "capstone" experience in a high school career pathway and can lead directly to employment or to future education/training. Our goal for each ROP course is to have students performing real industry tasks, learning from industry experts, and experiencing the pride of work well done.
The ROP program is governed by the Sonoma County Board of Education and administered by the Sonoma County Office of Education. We partner with local school districts to align course offerings to existing and developing career pathways. Our combined goal is to deliver effective career training to students and to do so within the context of a coordinated countywide program that’s linked to local workforce needs.
