The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were developed through a state-led national initiative to establish consistent and clear education standards for English-language arts and mathematics that would better prepare American students for success in college, career, and the competitive global economy. The California State Board of Education adopted the standards on August 2, 2010.
Although California has not yet established an implementation timeline, it is anticipated that schools and districts will transition to the new standards during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years, with full implementation in 2014-15.
New assessments aligned with the standards are expected to be implemented by Spring 2015.
