SCOE works with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office to provide educational services to adults serving time in local correctional facilities. The program uses a two-acre garden to teach a range of skills. These include:

  • irrigation
  • fresh water issues
  • sustainable agriculture methods including use of organic soil amendments
  • plant propagation
  • landscape design
  • soil conservation and composting
  • greenhouse production
  • plant identification
  • pruning techniques

Inmates can earn certificates that increase their employability when they are released. An example is the Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper (QWEL) from the Sonoma County Water Agency.
