Jennie Snyder named SCOE Deputy Superintendent of Instructional Services

06/03/2016 -

Snyderforweb Jennie Snyder, superintendent of Piner-Olivet Union School District in Santa Rosa for the last six years, will become the new Deputy Superintendent in charge of Instructional Services at the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) effective August 1, County Superintendent of Schools Steve Herrington announced Friday.

She will replace Mickey Porter, who was hired as Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services at SCOE in 2012 and promoted to Deputy Superintendent in 2014. Porter is stepping down in order to pursue private consulting work and will continue working with SCOE in that capacity on key events.

Prior to becoming a superintendent, Snyder worked as a school principal in the Piner-Olivet Union School District, a site administrator at Pathways Charter School, a middle school humanities teacher, and teacher leader with the California Reading and Literature Project. She earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of California, Davis. In her role as superintendent she received a Circle of Excellence award from Sonoma State University and the Superintendent of the Year award from the Sonoma County Association of School Administrators.

“I am thrilled to welcome a leader as passionate about education as Jennie Snyder,” Herrington said. “Her work with Maker education and 21st century learning is a perfect fit for SCOE's leadership in these areas.”

In her new position, Snyder will plan, organize, and direct all county programs and services that support teaching and learning in Sonoma County schools. She will oversee SCOE’s professional development programs for teachers, English learner services, school and district program improvement support, training for school administrators, and alternative and career technical education programs for students. She will administer countywide school readiness, library, and instructional technology services. As well, she will oversee the review and evaluation of Sonoma County school district and charter school Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAPS).

Dr. Herrington thanked Porter for her contributions to SCOE. “Mickey has been instrumental in the growth of her department, and many of SCOE’s biggest successes over the last four years are due to her efforts,” he said. “Her successor will inherit a strong department that is of great service to our local school districts.”
