SCOE’s Reading/Language Arts Resources
Kevin Feldman, reading and early intervention consultant at Sonoma County Office of Education, identifies key resources for educators in the Reading/Language Arts section of this website. This collection of resources, upcoming seminars, research, useful websites, and other information supports parents, teachers, administrators, and anyone else concerned with improving literacy in Sonoma County and beyond. Visitors can also join the “literacy listserv” to receive information related to literacy, from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. Focused topics include early intervention, decoding/fluency, vocabulary/comprehension, content literacy, and technology.
Learning Strategies Database: Reading Comprehension
This site has a fine collection of specific strategies for helping students who are poor or struggling readers develop effective reading behaviors and improve reading comprehension. In addition, the site presents helpful background information on reading comprehension and a comparison of good and poor reading behavior. Other learning strategies include: writing and proofing, test taking, time management, note taking, problem solving and critical thinking, motivation, and more. The Muskingum College (Ohio) Center for Advancement of Learning maintains this excellent site.
School-Home Links Reading Kits
Four hundred learning activities for strengthening children’s reading and writing skills are available from the U.S. Department of Education in easy-to-use “School-Home Links Reading Kits” for kindergarten through third grade. The School-Home Links are keyed directly to reading activities that teachers typically do with children in school and can involve family members, learning partners, or tutors in extending and supporting classroom learning.
