Visual & Perfoming Arts

SCOE believes that Visual & Performing Arts are much more than extra activities for students. Arts education is an integral part of the complete curriculum that public schools must endeavor to provide students. Learning through the arts can have far-reaching benefits for students and lead to greater engagement and higher academic achievement across the curriculum.

In the past, SCOE has funded an arts education specialist to provide ongoing support to local schools and district implementing the visual and performing arts standards. Due to budget restrictions, this position has been eliminated for the 2009-10 school year.

Keeping Score: Summer 2010 applications due April 1
Keeping Score is a professional development program for K-12 teachers in all subject areas to learn more about integrating music into core curriculum subjects – keeping the curriculum engaging while instilling in students a love and appreciation for music. The San Francisco Symphony, the Arts Council of Sonoma County, and the Santa Rosa Symphony have teamed together to offer this free opportunity. It includes a one-week Summer Institute in San Francisco (June 16-20), followed by four workshop days (two Fridays and two Saturdays) during the school year. The only financial obligation to the school is providing substitutes so participants may attend the two Friday sessions.

Download the application (pdf) or contact Karin Demarest for more information.

Two Non-Profits Receive Grants to Continue/Expand Arts Education
The Wells Fargo Center for the Arts announced in July that it had received a $50,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for its arts education programs. This funding was made available through President Obama’s economic stimulus package and will be used to preserve the coordinator of the Center’s programs for K-12 students throughout Sonoma County.

Sonoma Valley Museum of Art received a similar $50,000 NEA grant to expand its arts education programs. Grants were received by 630 organizations nationally, including 99 in California.

Display Your Students’ Artwork at SCOE
SCOE regularly displays student artwork at its main office facility in Santa Rosa. Display boards for two-dimensional framed or unframed art (work may be pinned or stapled to the boards) and display cases for three-dimensional pieces are available. Participating schools are responsible for hanging their own exhibits, labeling the pieces displayed, and removing the exhibit at the conclusion of the display. Exhibit space is available for one-month periods, beginning on the first working day of the month and ending on the last working day of the month. Note that exhibits may not include works depicting alcohol, smoking, violence, or nudity.

To reserve exhibit space, complete this Art Work Exhibit Request form (doc). If you have questions, contact Connie Anderson at canderson@scoe.org or (707) 524-2823.
