Custom-Built Dashboard Eliminates Barriers to Supporting Students
Schools hold powerful data that educators can use to improve student outcomes. But that information can be spread throughout multiple databases and platforms, which often require expertise to run complicated reports.
To help Sonoma County’s school leaders see a complete picture of each student as well as of their schools and districts, SCOE’s Student Support Services & Accountability division is developing SCOE Dash. This custom-built dashboard brings together a vast array of student data — from attendance information to course grades, state assessment scores, behavioral interventions, and the impact of intervention on student outcomes. By seeing all of this information in one place, school leaders can view real-time data, monitor trends, and make quick, informed decisions.
This centralized approach reduces the demand on staff to compile this information themselves while improving accuracy and consistency. Nightly updates ensure information is timely and trusted, while simplified reporting and visualization provide smarter workflows that save time and energy. Because SCOE Dash is designed by educators for schools, it is built to preserve student confidentiality.
SCOE Dash is currently in a pilot phase with nine Sonoma County school districts who use an array of different student information systems. The goal is to have a countywide implementation for the 2026-27 school year.
Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence
Establishing Best Practices for Fast-Moving Tech
Artificial intelligence (AI) is not new, but generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude have quickly transformed workplaces and schools. While they have the ability to supercharge teaching and learning, they also have introduced a number of potential pitfalls. These include reinforcing biases, introducing factual errors and hallucinations, and potential long-term implications for critical thinking that are still being studied.
To help Sonoma County schools effectively use and manage AI, SCOE last fall became one of the first educational agencies in California to create a new Director of Artificial Intelligence position. This position supports staff at school districts and SCOE by offering trainings in the responsible use of AI, as well as helping to refine prompts to improve data analysis and take advantage of potential efficiencies.
State Accountability Tool for Families
The California School Dashboard is the state’s tool designed to give a complete picture of how schools and districts are meeting students’ needs. The dashboard tracks indicators such as scores on state standardized tests, the progress of multilingual learners, chronic absenteeism, college and career readiness, graduation rates, and suspension rates.

A Technology Backbone for School Districts
Infrastructure, Software, and Funding Support
SCOE’s Information Technology department provides network infrastructure and tech support for most of Sonoma County’s 40 public school districts. Our team helps keep networks up and running while students and teachers are on campus and works to ensure they have internet access during emergencies. In addition, staff aid school districts’ finance, payroll, and accounts payable teams with trainings and technical support for business software and student information systems. Lastly the department helps local schools obtain federal funding through programs that subsidize internet connections for schools and libraries.
