SANTA ROSA, CA — The Sonoma County Event Fairgrounds transformed into a hub of creativity and scientific inquiry Tuesday, March 3, as the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) hosted its ninth STEAM Showcase. This year’s event brought together 550 students from 15 schools and eight districts, all centered around a timely and vital theme: Wellness.

This year’s showcase challenged students from grades 2-8 to explore how science, technology, engineering, arts, and math can be used to nurture our bodies, minds, hearts, and spirits and communities. Guided by dedicated mentors, including teachers, parents, and community leaders, students presented sophisticated projects to evaluators, demonstrating how technical skills can be applied to improve our well-being, our relationships and our environment.

Hands-On Learning and Community Spirit

The energy at the Sonoma County Event Center was electric as students balanced their formal presentations with interactive "maker" activities. Between rounds of interviews with evaluators, participants engaged in a variety of hands-on experiences:

  • Engineering and Design: Students built small-scale cars and tested their speed and durability on custom tracks.
  • Creative Expression: Makerspaces featured T-shirt printing and various arts and crafts activities designed to spark imagination.
  • Community Connection: Over a shared pizza lunch, students from across the county had the chance to discuss their work and celebrate their accomplishments together.

The success of the day was bolstered by more than 70 community volunteers who served as evaluators and mentors, providing the encouragement and "push" that helps students turn their academic interests into future careers.

A Partnership for the Future

An event of this scale is made possible through the generous support of local industry leaders who are invested in the next generation of innovators. We extend our deepest gratitude to our sponsors:

Synopsys STEM Opportunity Fund, Medtronic, Bank of Marin, Chandi Hospitality Group, American Council of Engineering Companies (North Coast chapter), Brelje and Race Engineering Consultants, Quattrochi Kwok Architects, BC Engineering Group, and the Sonoma County Fairgrounds Foundation.

By investing in these students today, our community is ensuring a future where the next generation is equipped to handle life’s challenges with both technical skill and a focus on well-being.
