SCOE Celebrates National Day of Reading
The Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) recently welcomed students and families for its second National Day of Reading event, in partnership with the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.
The event on Friday, Feb. 27, brought together families who registered and community partners for evening readings of four age-appropriate stories featuring transgender or non-binary youth. It’s part of a broader body of work at SCOE to establish our schools as welcoming spaces where every student and family feels like they belong and that their identity is celebrated, protected, and included.
National Day of Reading, which is organized by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, began in 2016 when communities nationwide hosted reading events, inspired by a community reading of the book, “I am Jazz,” in Wisconsin the year before.
Over time, the event has evolved and now includes a series of stories for youth of various ages. Learn more on the Human Rights Campaign’s website.
Thanks so much to PFLAG Sonoma County, Positive Images, Amor Para Todos, LGBTQ Connection, Sonoma County Library, Compass Parents Petaluma, our student readers, and the many volunteers for their support.
