Outstanding iPad App: Exploriments’ Simple Circuits

CircuitLearning about electricity can be interesting and fun with an iPad app from Exploriments called Simple Circuits. Based on constructivist learning theory, Simple Circuits encourages inquiry and experimentation. Users make their own electrical circuits by choosing elements from a component palette. Elements can be connected in varied arrangements, then “turned on” to show design results.

The Simple Circuits component palette has an endless supply of wires, switches, and bulbs that can be put into circuits. Electrical toys are also available that add motion and fun to operational circuits. Some of the electrical toys include a Ferris wheel, drum-playing monkey, animated robot, and windmill. Users have options to make circuits that model different concepts and choices to build circuits of their own design.

Classroom Ideas for Simple Circuits

Whole class demonstration tool
Sharing one iPad screen through a projection device, Simple Circuits can animate differences and similarities between parallel and series circuits using direct teaching methods.

Small group/individual learning resource
Learning stations can be offered for students to work with iPads in pairs or individually to take on different challenges. For example, learners could create circuits that demonstrate specific criteria (e.g., make a single circuit with switches to turn a Ferris wheel and windmill on/off independently).

Support Resources

The Exploriments website has different support resources for the Simple Circuits app, including both Insights and Videos as described below.

  • Insights
Insights are text resources that offer key ideas about circuits. Examples and explanations are provided to support and extend learning. Examples include:

—Short circuits prevent devices from working
—Any number of switches can be added in series
—Devices in series share power, so each device runs slower
—Using a bulb in serial as an indicator of load
—A low resistance branch can prevent other devices from working
  • Videos
Demonstration videos are also available from the Exploriments website. Videos demonstrate key app features and showcase important concepts that can guide teachers, parents, and mentors.

"I like Amarosa because there's a much smaller student count and so teachers can be one-on-one with you. They can actually help you and be one-on-one with you while the class is doing something else. I feel like that's a huge game-changer." - Leilan, Student
