Summer Coding and Robotics Activities for Kids

RoboticsSonoma County is fortunate to have a variety of excellent summer youth activities offered by many different organizations. Among the offerings it’s possible to find some great activities to help students learn about coding and robotics. Here’s a look at some of the activities with their sponsoring organization and contact information.


Camp Pi, Redwood Council of the Boy Scouts of America
First- to fifth-grade boys and girls are invited to an introductory camp for learning about the Raspberry Pi. Participants will be introduced to computing, programming, problem solving, and other activities during the week of July 27-31. At the end of the week, participants will be able to take home their Raspberry Pi and other projects.

EXCEL for Youth, Sonoma State University
EXCEL for Youth offers a number of unique opportunities for summer learning. Among the options are three specific classes for learning about coding and robotics:

  • Build Your First Website
  • Adventures in Lego Robotics
  • EV3 LEGO Robotics Design & Competition

Minecraft Coding Camps, Sonoma County Library
Offered at different Sonoma County Library locations through the summer, this activity provides opportunities for youth in grades 6-9 to combine learning about coding with Minecraft. Minecraft is a video game originally created by programmer Markus Persson and later developed and published by the Swedish company Mojang. Attendance is by prior registration only. Registration opens one month prior to the workshop date, by email, by phone at (707) 545-0831 x1553, or by visiting the hosting library branch.

Children’s Museum of Sonoma County Wonder Camp, LEGO Robotics
The Children’s Museum of Sonoma County is offering an exciting introduction to the LEGO Mindstorms RCX Robotics Invention System. Learn mechanical design, construction, programming, and teamwork skills. Working in pairs and using LEGO building elements, motors and sensors, students build different robots and program them with a computer to move, react. and make sounds to solve challenges.

The Boys and Girls Club of Sonoma Valley offers both coding and robotics activities throughout the summer. Here’s a listing of opportunities:
