As many of you know, we have two ESS team members retiring at the end of the 2017-18 school year: Karen McGahey and Rick Phelan.

During her six years at SCOE, Karen McGahey has been a strong advocate for all students within our community. Through her work, Karen has taken a stand for what matters most. Whether creating thought-provoking and powerful learning opportunities such as Equity at the Core and trips to the Museum of Tolerance or supporting principals or working tirelessly to make arts education a reality for every student, her commitment to equity has been at the center of her work. In each of these ways, and so many more, she has made an impact on numerous educators across our county. We wish her the very best as she transitions to her next chapter.

A retirement celebration is planned for Karen on Sunday, May 20th. Please contact Jenn Guerrero for full details.

During his twenty+ years at SCOE, Rick Phelan has been a tremendous resource to many educators across our county, helping them to navigate an ever changing data landscape. His ability to create road maps by putting data into understandable and useful formats have been greatly appreciated by teachers and administrators alike. Rick has also created opportunities for students to showcase their creativity and critical thinking through the hugely successful Robotics Challenge. We wish him the very best in his next adventure.

A retirement celebration is planned for Rick on Friday, June 8th. Please contact Matt O’Donnell for full details.

All SCOE 2017-18 retirees will be honored at an afternoon reception just prior to the June 7th Board meeting. Please stop by the reception if you’re able!
