Geyserville and Liberty Elementaries Named California Distinguished Schools
04/06/2018 -
County Superintendent Steve Herrington extended his congratulations to two Sonoma County primary schools that were named 2018 California Distinguished Schools this week: Liberty Elementary in Liberty School District and Geyserville Elementary in Geyserville Unified School District.
These schools were among 287 elementary schools that received state recognition. Sponsored by California Casualty, the 2018 California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes California elementary schools that have made exceptional gains in implementing academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education. The program returns after a three-year break as the state transitioned to new standards and tests, and replaces the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program.
It was Geyserville Elementary's first time receiving the honor. “This award is a direct reflection of the dedication, hard-work, and vision of our school’s educational community. Congratulations to all students, staff, and parents at Geyserville Elementary School, and the entire Geyserville community,” said Geyserville USD Superintendent Deborah Bertolucci.
Liberty School also received the award in 2006 and 2000, according to SCOE records.
Liberty Superintendent/Principal Christopher Rafanelli stated that this recognition “reaffirms the dedication, hard work and attention to detail of our students, staff, and parents.” Rafanelli added, “It also speaks to the commitment of our entire community to make sure that every child is given the opportunity to reach his or her own potential. It takes a complete commitment to the values and philosophy of our school, by our staff and parents, to provide such an enriching and profound educational experience. Our families know that when you come to Liberty, you are not just enrolling your child but your entire family.”
These exemplary schools will be honored in May during a ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. More information can be found on the state Distinguished Schools website.
