Caryn FisherCaryn Fisher, a kindergarten teacher at Dunham Elementary School in Petaluma, has been named Sonoma County Teacher of the Month for March 2020.

The monthly award honors one of Sonoma County's most outstanding teachers from October through May. It is sponsored by the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE), K-HITS 104.9, and Community First Credit Union (CFCU), with additional support from Platinum Chevrolet and Bernstein Orthodontics.

“We need high-quality, caring teachers now more than ever to help our students thrive in a complex and ever-changing world,” said Steven D. Herrington, Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools. “The Teacher of the Month program this year seeks to honor, support, and thank those teachers."

Numerous heartfelt nominations from students, parents, and colleagues alike poured in for Ms. Fisher this winter. Students described Ms. Fisher as a kind, happy, dedicated teacher who not only cares for her current students but also organizes school clubs and tutors older students in reading and spelling.

One nomination read, “She exudes joy and radiates happiness. She is the perfect most quintessential kindergarten teacher. Every child and parent who comes through her door is greeted by a giant smile and rosy cheeks.”

Another nomination read, "I frequently think how lucky the Dunham Community is to have a wonderful teacher like Ms. Fisher. Not only is she amazing with our kindergartners, she is also instrumental in the school community. Her passion, her energy, her commitment, and her constant smile are only a few of the traits that make her an award-worthy teacher."

Representatives from SCOE and KHITS surprised Ms. Fisher with her award in a surprise presentation at a school assembly. She was also given $650 worth of gift cards for classroom supplies, courtesy of Bernstein Orthodontics, Platinum Chevrolet, and Redwood Credit Union.
