Former Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools dies at age 94

07/21/2015 - Walter A. Eagan, Ed.D., who served as Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools from 1968 to 1986, passed away on Monday, July 20. Dr. Eagan completed 40 dedicated and productive years of educational service to several generations of Sonoma County learners at the time of his retirement in 1986. During his tenure, Dr. Eagan saw the school district population double in size with the addition of 24 new schools. At this time, many one-room county schools lapsed, consolidated, or unified into the current 40 school districts. In 1968, Dr. Eagan officially changed the County Superintendent of Schools Office name to Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE), as it is known today.

Dr. Eagan will be remembered for his consistent standards of educational excellence and dedication to the students in our county.
