Two-Step Verification
To setup the Two-Step Verification you will need your mobile phone and SCOE laptop. The goal is to connect your mobile phone to your SCOE Google/Gmail account as a second method of verification. If someone tries to get unauthorized access to your account, you will receive a notification to your phone on the Gmail app and you will have the ability to decline the access.
Using Your Mobile Phone
- Download the Gmail app on your phone from the app store if you don't have it installed already.
- Sign into the Gmail app using your SCOE Google/Gmail username: FirstInitialLastName@scoe.org and password
Using Your Laptop
1. Open Chrome. If Chrome is already open, open a new tab. It should look like this:
2. Click on the dot grid in the top right:
3. Select Account:
4. In the navigation panel on the left, select Security.
5. Under “How you sign in to Google,” verify that the Google prompt row is showing 1 device (your mobile phone). If not, make sure you are signed into the Gmail app using your SCOE Google/Gmail username and password.
6. Below the Google prompt section, there is a button called “Authenticator”. Click on the “Authenticator” button.
7. Click on “Set up authenticator”.
8. A QR code will show up. Do not scan the QR code, or click “Next” yet. You need to install another app on your phone first. So, keep the laptop on and switch to your phone.
Using your mobile phone
1. Go to the app store and download the Twilio Authy app.
2. Once downloaded, open the app to set it up. Select the country code (you can type UN in the search bar to avoid scrolling through a lot of countries.), type in your mobile phone number, type in your SCOE email address, and select to receive a SMS text message to verify the account. The Authy app will send you a code through text message. Copy the code and paste into the Authy app.
3. After the initial setup, you will see a message saying you don’t have any accounts. You will now connect the Authy app with your SCOE Google account.
4. Click on the plus sign.
5. Click on the blue button to scan the QR code.
6. Scan the QR code that is on your laptop from the section above “Using Your Laptop” step 8.
Using your laptop
1. After you scanned the QR code, leave the Authy app open and finish the setup on your laptop. Click on “Next”.
2. Type in the 6-digit code from the Authy app. The code will expire and regenerate every 30 seconds. If you see there is not enough time, wait for the new code to appear.
3. Click on Verify.
4. Last Important Step: Click on the blue button “Turn on 2 step verification”. Click on the arrow to go to the previous page and click on the blue button “Turn on 2 step verification” again. If you don’t click the button twice, Google won’t enroll you in the two step verification and ask to enroll again.
Every time you login to your SCOE Google/Gmail account, you will receive a notification to your Gmail app to verify it’s you who is logging in. Tap “Yes, it’s me” to gain access to your account.
When should I use the Authy app?
Every 6 months SCOE IT requires you to reset your SCOE Google/Gmail password. When you reset your password, the account in the Gmail app will automatically sign out.
You CANNOT login to your SCOE Google/Gmail account on your laptop if the two-step verification is disabled on your phone. You can regain access to your SCOE account with the code that the Authy app generates. See steps below.
Steps to reset your password every 6 months:
1. Go to reset.scoe.org and login.
2. Reset your password.
3. Sign into your SCOE Google/Gmail account on your mobile phone FIRST. The app will ask for a Google Authenticator’s code. Open the Authy app, copy the code (you can copy the code using the icon circled in red in the image.) and paste it into the Gmail app before the 30 seconds expire.
4. THEN, sign into your SCOE Google/Gmail account on your laptop. You will receive a notification to the Gmail app as usual.
