Carolina Herrera and members of her family.

How many years have you been at SCOE?
It will be three years in August.

Job title: Behavioral Health Specialist

How do you describe your job to people outside of SCOE?
I support young people’s well-being and healing through presentations, trainings, and individual therapy. Because I am bilingual in Spanish and English, I primarily serve Spanish-speaking and Latinx students and families through culturally responsive services, including therapy at schools, parent workshops on mental health awareness, and suicide prevention trainings.

Where did you grow up?
I was born in Colombia and lived there until I was 20.

Who was your favorite childhood teacher and why?
Miss Julia, my 4th-grade teacher. I remember this being a time of transition for me with a lot of developmental and emotional changes. Miss Julia did an awesome job at just being present for me, listening and normalizing many of these experiences, always in a warm and nonjudgmental way. This made the difference for me because I was a shy student and had a difficult time reaching out for support. She encouraged me to speak up and express myself.

What is your favorite thing about SCOE?
My team! They are some of the most inspiring, brave, and compassionate people I have ever worked with.

What is one of your most memorable moments as a SCOE employee?
When I helped support a Youth Advisory Council in 2023. I watched and witnessed the amazing gifts each of those young people brought to the conversations and actions. It was humbling and inspiring.

Outside of work, what is your favorite hobby or way to unwind?
I meditate every day. I also love engaging in anything that is creative, whether it be dancing, drawing, painting, or singing and playing guitar. Recently, I have discovered jewelry making.

Do you have a favorite TV show, movie or book that involves a school setting?
“La Lengua de las mariposas” (Butterfly’s tongue), a story that takes place during the Spanish Civil War and is told through the eyes of a child who develops a relationship with a special teacher.

What is your favorite place in Sonoma County?
Wright’s Beach, or anywhere on the coast.

What might people be surprised to learn about you?
Maybe that while I lived and volunteered in Chiapas, Mexico, in my 20's, I used to make a living by singing in a band that played in local bars and restaurants. I didn’t make much money but it was fun.
