Dane DeMattei

How many years have you been at SCOE?
I have been a SCOE employee for 31 years. Can you say #1 on the ASCOE seniority list?! Gotta be #1 at something!

Job title:
Court School Teacher

How do you describe your job to people outside of SCOE?
People seem to be very intrigued when you tell them you teach at a Juvenile Hall. I generally tell them that I wear many hats: I am a counselor, fireman, referee, cat herder, and role model. I tell them that each day or unit can be very different depending on any new students, what staff are working, or what is going on in the students' lives. I try to meet the students where they are, and encourage them to get the most out of their time here.

Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Santa Rosa (only moved away for two and a half years when I went to college in Chico). I might be moving soon!

Who was your favorite childhood teacher and why?
Mrs. Stevenson, my 6th grade teacher. In 5th grade we were all afraid of her, but once I was in her class I realized how much she cared about her students, and she was really a softy on the inside.

What is your favorite thing about SCOE?
I feel very lucky that I have really liked each and every one of my principals over the years. I also love how much our teachers care for these students when many other people give up on them.

What is one of your most memorable moments as a SCOE employee?
Way back in the day (in my early teaching years) when I worked at Sierra Youth Center, I was able to mentor a couple of the students where I took them out to west county where we were able to officiate middle school flag football games. The students gained leadership experience and self-confidence, plus they earned some extra money.

Outside of work, what is your favorite hobby or way to unwind?
I am an avid disc golfer who tries his best to compete at the “Pro 50” level — yes we play for money, and no I haven’t made much. I also unwind by refereeing high school basketball. The focus it takes makes you forget about anything else troubling you for the day!

Do you have a favorite TV show, movie or book that involves a school setting?
The Breakfast Club

What is your favorite place in Sonoma County?
Rosa Park on Fulton Road or Taylor Mountain (Both disc golf courses)

What might people be surprised to learn about you?
One of my most proud things in life is that I was able to put myself through college without any student loans or help from my parents, by working all summer and 20+ hours each week during the school year. (Unfortunately I don’t think this is possible any longer) Oh yeah, and the funniest job I ever had was teaching older women aqua aerobics when I went to Chico. (I had to hustle for every cent!)
