Registration Open: EL Leadership Conference & Parent Institute

English Learner Leadership Conference, Feb 3
Administrators, teachers, coaches, and EL coordinators are invited to attend SCOE’s annual English Learner Leadership Conference. Participants will gain access to effective tools and strategies that pertain directly to English Learners in areas such as Common Core, ELD Standards, ELA/ELD Framework, and Local Control Funding Formula. This year's keynote speakers include:

  • Dr. Patrica Gándara, co-director of the Civil Rights Project at UCLA and author of several provocative publications around equity, including The Latino Education Crisis
  • Dr. Harold Asturias, director of the Center for Mathematics Excellence and Equity at the Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley

Breakout session topics include:

  • Unpacking linguistic features of academic texts (6-12)
  • Teaching informative writing through science & social studies (K-5)
  • Strategies to access word problems (K-5)
  • Optimizing brain research to enhance EL learning (6-12)
  • Best practices for English Learner success from across the state 
  • A guided tour of the ELA/ELD Framework
  • Making the LCAP a true game changer for English Learners

Parent Leadership Institute, Jan 30
Migrant Education and SCOE have teamed up to host this FREE event for parents of English Learners. Workshops will be held in Spanish and will address:

  • Developing academic language in the home
  • Educating today for the future
  • Taking back the power in your family

The Institute also includes breakfast, lunch, and all materials. Please see this English/Spanish flier (pdf) for more information and distribute the flier to anyone you feel might benefit from this information. Parents may register online.
