School Board Election Information

Local school boards are at the heart of this country’s public education system. A board’s existence is based on the belief that lay control of public education makes schools flexible and responsive to the needs of the local community.

Voters within each school district elect school board members. School board elections are part of the general election in even-numbered years.

2018 General Election Timeline

July 16 to August 10, 2018
Nomination filing period for all school board offices that are up for election on November 6, 2018. All candidates must file the following with the Sonoma County Registrar of Voters:

  • Declaration of Candidacy
  • Ballot Designation Worksheet
  • Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700)

If a candidate wishes to file an optional Statement of Qualifications, it must be filed at the same time as the nomination documents. If a school district requires payment in advance, the candidate must pay the school district and bring proof of payment to the Registrar of Voters at the time of the nomination filing.

August 10-15, 2018
Extended nomination filing period. If an incumbent officer fails to file his/her nomination documents by the close of nominations on August 10, 2018, anyone other than the incumbent, who is otherwise qualified, may file nomination documents during this extended nomination period.

November 6, 2018
Election Day. Polls open from 7:00am to 8:00pm.

December 6, 2018
Sonoma County Registrar of Voters certifies the results of the November 6, 2018, election.
