Diversity and Inclusion in the Classroom

Unconscious bias occurs when we make spontaneous judgments about people or situations based on past experiences, culture, or environment. In this workshop, participants will explore aspects of their own identity through the lens of media and lived experience to consider how those aspects are depicted, whether positive or negative. This training will provide participants with critical insights that will inform their instruction as well as techniques to identify and address unconscious bias and micro-aggressions that may surface in an educational setting.ACEs, or Adverse Childhood Experience scores, impact students in every classroom. In this interactive workshop, explore the knowledge, insight, and techniques necessary for approaching youth with high ACEs and trauma-embedded behaviors. Participants will navigate the neurological science behind behaviors youth express and explore how to reshape approaches to address those behaviors. Learn or revisit how to integrate art into your toolbox to problem solve behaviors and communicate with students in new, more meaningful ways.

In this three-part virtual series, participants will explore the science and social systems that impact classroom practice. This engaging, interactive, and non-judgmental series will support arts educators and administrators as they reflect their practice toward culture, communications, instruction, and student expectations in the classroom.
