English Language Learners: Building Academic Vocabulary in Social Studies Through Creative Movement

This workshop was developed in association with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and is partially underwritten by the Department of Education and the National Committee for the Performing Arts.

All students benefit from learning through multiple modalities—seeing, hearing, moving, and interpersonal interaction. For English language learners in particular, adding kinesthetic learning to the teaching environment opens a host of language learning opportunities. In this fascinating workshop, learn ways to guide movement explorations in which ELL students authentically interact with and internalize academic vocabulary. You’ll apply the process to social studies, specifically to the geography, economic, and culture of the pre-colonial Powhatan people, and consider a myriad of other applications.
