Name:
Bonnie Hayne

Years at SCOE:
Two years

Job Title:
Program Specialist with SELPA working primarily with the Early Start program.

How do you describe your job to people outside SCOE?
SELPA Early Start provides services for infants and toddlers who have vision, hearing, or orthopedic concerns.

Where did you grow up?
San Diego. I came up to attend college at UC Berkeley and stayed. When we had our eldest child, we decided we wanted to be close to family in Sonoma County.

Who was your favorite childhood teacher and why?
Mrs. Lillian Schaefer, a third grade teacher at Green Elementary. She inspired a love of learning, had a lot of fun projects that I still remember, and connected to each kid in her class. And she gave out candy on Fridays.

What is your favorite thing about working for SCOE/SELPA?
I work with a great team of people. It is very satisfying to work for a program that served my daughter many years ago. I really enjoy working with different agencies across the county to help families and children.

What is one of your most memorable moments as a SCOE employee?
It’s not so much one memorable moment, but the overall experience of working with families in the context of their daily lives, and getting to know people all over the county. It’s a real privilege.

Outside of work, what is your favorite hobby or way to unwind?
I really enjoy doing things with my family. (I’m married to a middle school teacher and we still have two out of three kids at home.) This week, that includes playing bassoon in my daughter’s high school theater production. It’s my first high school play. We go to soccer games, debate tournaments or whatever the kids are up to, and we love to boogie board at the beach all year long...with wet suits.

What is your favorite place in Sonoma County?
Doran Beach, the Sonoma Coast

What is one thing that might surprise people to learn about you?
I lived in Indonesia for a year during college. That’s where I decided to become a nurse.
