This inaugural event was designed to bring the families and the community together for a celebration of different cultures and languages.

“We wanted to introduce children to the roots of who we are,” said SCOE TALLK Coach Elena Janred, who coordinated the event with Site Director, Cyndy Floyd. This included bringing in Aztec dancers to demonstrate traditional arts through dance, costumes, and music as well as the children singing in three languages: English, Spanish, and American Sign Language.

“By coming together, celebrating who we are and enjoying a shared meal, we strengthen our community and our ties to one another.,” Janred said.

The TALLK (Teachers Acquiring Language Learner Knowledge) Project is a unique SCOE initiative that focuses on coaching preschool teachers to build student oral language development and literacy skills in both English and the student’s home language.
