This afternoon you should have received an email from Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Amie Carter, inviting you to take part in a focus group conversation to gather anecdotes and data about the current status of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in our county. This will take place on Wednesday, April 12th from 8:30am- 10:00am.

Dr. Carter is reaching out to a wide range of SCOE stakeholders and the Multilingual Learner Collaborative was intentionally chosen because of our unique perspective of student and family experiences.

We hope that you are able to attend, please RSVP here.

Dr. Carter’s email:

Greetings:

One of the main commitments I made to our county as I campaigned to hold this office was to support and move the needle on issues of DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) in our county. To this end, I’m asking for your participation.

I’ve partnered with an outside equity expert to assist in gathering anecdotes and data about what is the current status of DEI in our county, and what are the pressing needs to be addressed. Daryton Ramsey is an experienced educator who has lead at the site, district and county level in California and now in Texas. He is well versed in issues of equity, and from his county office experience, is aware of how a county office of education can help to move the needle in this important work.

Daryton will be in our county the week of April 11th-15th. He is scheduled to meet with a variety of stakeholders during that time.

I am requesting that you make this a priority within your busy schedule. Your voice and perspective is necessary to ensure our next steps are aligned with the greatest areas of need.

Please join others in a 90 minute focus group conversation led by Daryton on Wednesday, April 12th @ 8:30 a.m..  The conversation will take place as a zoom meeting.  Invitation to follow. There is no preparation necessary - just your indication that you will be joining us. Please go here to sign up for this important conversation. RSVP

Below is a message from Daryton. I know you will enjoy working with him.

Warmly,

Dr. Amie Carter

The purpose of the focus group is to explore and better understand how SCOE stakeholders have experienced DEI in the past as well as how they are currently experiencing equity, diversity and inclusion as it relates to their specific roles and their respective organizations. Once we have collected your important stakeholder input and feedback, it will ultimately be used to inform SCOE’s decision making processes as a part of an overarching equity focused strategic planning process.

Lastly please be advised, while we encourage you to participate in the focus groups, we also want to share that should you participate, your participation is voluntary. The session will be approximately 90 minutes.

Thank you and we look forward to listening and learning with you as a valued SCOE stakeholder.

"I like Amarosa because there's a much smaller student count and so teachers can be one-on-one with you. They can actually help you and be one-on-one with you while the class is doing something else. I feel like that's a huge game-changer." - Leilan, Student
