Sonoma County Exemplary Teacher Nomination deadline: June 30, 2020

Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) is recognizing exemplary teachers who have risen to the challenge of educating students and supporting families during the 2020 Coronavirus crisis and shelter in place. Given the current conditions, and the uncertainty of the statewide Teachers of the Year program, this process is intended to alternatively acknowledge teachers who might otherwise have been considered for the Sonoma County Teacher of the Year awards. Administrators are invited to nominate exemplary teachers for this recognition. Selected teachers will be honored at the fall Sonoma County ACSA event and will receive financial recognition from Community First Credit Union. To apply, forward a nomination form along with any additional documents to Kimberly Vallee (kvallee@scoe.org). Applications are due by 4:00pm on June 30, 2020.

California Teachers of the Year

With the closure of schools this spring we are unable to observe teaching in classrooms, which is a key part of the selection process. The California Teacher of the Year process is also uncertain given that the state had just recognized the 2020 Teachers of the Year before schools were closed for the remainder of the school year. Due to these circumstances, we are suspending the selection process for the 2021 Teacher of the Year Program and will automatically applications in the 2022 Sonoma County Teacher of the Year process (which will be conducted in May 2021).

The Sonoma County Teacher of the Year program provides recognition for outstanding teachers in our county.

The winner is honored at the annual Administrators’ Kickoff event at the Sonoma County Office of Education, receives a $3,000 award from event sponsor Community First Credit Union, tickets to the Santa Rosa Symphony and a token of appreciation from Jackson Family Wines. A finalist is also honored at the kick-off and receives a $2,000 award.

The Sonoma County Teacher of the Year will work with SCOE’s Teacher of the Year coordinator to apply for the California Teacher of the Year award. SCOE is looking to recognize a teacher who is an exemplar of masterful teaching who would participate in the state application process. This prestigious statewide competition involves county offices of education nominating winners from their regional Teachers of the Year competitions. A state selection committee then reviews candidates' applications and conducts site visits for up to twenty applicants to evaluate the teacher’s rapport with students, classroom environment, presentation skills, and teaching methods, among other criteria. A select group of up to ten teachers are interviewed at the California Department of Education in Sacramento. The State Superintendent then names five teachers as California Teachers of the Year.
